Toy Care 101: How to Clean, Store, and Make Your Toys Last Longer (Plus: Become a Product Tester!)
Clean and store a toy according to the instructions for its exact model. The material, seams, removable parts, motor and charging port all affect what care is permitted. A general silicone or waterproof label does not establish that every part can be soaked, boiled or treated with the same cleaner.
Before first use and after use
Read the care instructions and identify which surfaces or parts are intended to be cleaned. Use only permitted cleaning products and water exposure. Rinse away residue where rinsing is allowed, then let the relevant surfaces and parts dry as directed.
If the instructions are absent or conflict with the product description, ask support before using an improvised cleaning method. A quick wipe or a strong disinfectant should not be assumed to provide adequate care for every construction.
Powered devices and removable parts
Do not boil a toy with a motor or battery. Keep charging equipment dry and follow the model’s instructions before reconnecting power. A stated water rating does not automatically apply to an adapter, cable or an open charging port.
Remove or invert a sleeve only if the instructions permit it. Do not stretch, dismantle or soak a bonded part based on guidance for a different product. For sleeve-specific questions, see our male stroker care guide.
Choose a compatible lubricant
NHS Sexual Health Oxfordshire lubricant guidance advises checking lubricant type and toy compatibility. Silicone lubricant can damage some silicone and realistic-feel surfaces; oil-based lubricant can damage latex condoms. Check both product labels rather than relying on a home patch test. Our lubricant guide explains the comparison.
Drying, storage and inspection
Let the item dry fully before storage, following the model’s guidance. Use a clean storage arrangement that protects the contact surfaces. Do not assume every sleeve needs powder or that household powder is an approved substitute.
Inspect for tears, damaged seams, persistent residue or changes in the surface. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement instructions, and stop using an item that causes irritation or pain. A general guide cannot establish a universal lifespan.
Questions and feedback
Can all silicone toys be boiled? No; construction and the manufacturer’s instructions matter. Can all waterproof toys be cleaned in a dishwasher? No; a water rating does not establish heat or detergent compatibility.
